Moments

At Keturah’s graduation, Friday Ben Orth spoke of the value of moments, of how while we all have big moments in our lives, making the perfect catch, etc. these big moments are the result of small everyday moments. In my life as a mom I have seen how these moments add up with the end of May and the first week of June bringing many into our lives.

May 30th brought us the first of these moments when Andrew was the 2 of Spades in the Red Rock Drama Club’s production of Alice in Wonderland. He has participated in this club since January, meeting once a week after school to learn parts and practice. The group was done as part of the Gear up program and was very well done. The Queen of Hearts stole the show and the “dance off” between Alice and the Queen was a fun alternative to the croquet game from the film. Our sweet Sammie played an awesome White Rabbit.

Our next moment was May 31st when Andrew was baptized. It really doesn’t seem like it has been eight years since this sweet little fellow entered my life. In fact, I really think that it was really just yesterday and this is all an illusion, but Andrew turned eight and so forward, we went. He was so excited for his baptism and just wanted to be a member of church. When I asked him how he felt about being baptized his answer was simply “mom I have to be baptized if I want to be an Eagle Scout and go on a mission.” To him it is that simple, this is the first step, the first moment, in what he wants to accomplish in his life. This year has also brought us his interest in reading. For Andrew reading has been a struggle, he does well but reads very slowly which means that he is actually slightly behind his grade level for reading resulting in no interest in reading for pleasure. In a family where reading is and always has been something of an obsession, this is a real disadvantage. This year that suddenly changed, when Andrew discovered that reading is fun. When we got his report card, it reflected this new interest and with some work, we have high hopes that his reading rate just as high as the other areas of schoolwork (all at standard or above).

Our next moment was on June 6th as we watched Keturah accept her diploma from Royal High School. The last two years have been an interesting mixture of high school and college as she has participated in the running start program. She has learned a lot about responsibility and organization. While Brandt and I have learned, a lot about helping an almost adult learn to be an adult. She has 3 classes to complete her associates degree so has decided to stay at Big Bend for another year to finish up and take some fun stuff. All too soon, we will be losing her to the “big world” but for now, we’re happy she’s choosing to finish what she started. She is seriously considering entering a nursing program, possibly at BYU or BYU Idaho. We are very proud of her and her accomplishments. Oaky so there is not accounting for taste.

So life goes on here, and the little everyday moments are adding up.
